Stress Management Techniques for Moms #7: Hang out with your friends

How long has it been since you have been out with the girls?  As moms we can sometimes isolate ourselves from those we loved to hang out with before we became mothers.  We simply get so wrapped up in our busy schedules.  We need to reconnect because having someone who understands how we feel, to talk with or just to have fun with is fabulous respite.

You need to keep in touch and see your girlfriend on a regular basis. You may not be able to even get out of the house.. but that is OK, invite your friend over for coffee while your child naps. Time with other adults is super important.. we can’t just talk about Barney all day without going crazy ;)

Stress Management Techniques for Moms #8: Exchange Babysitting

If you’re always saying you never get out because you can’t afford a babysitter, you need to stop making that excuse.. There has to be someone in your life who also needs a break but can’t afford to have someone to care for the children on a regular basis. Give this person a call and exchange babysitting services this way you both get the break you need with out spending a dime.

Think of all the things you can do if you get a babysitter occasionally.  You could: go on a date, take a class or just run a few errands!

Sometimes it just takes a bit of letting go in order to get what we need.

Stress Management TechniquesWe have been working through Stress Management Techniques for Moms. if you haven’t seen them yet check out tips 1&23&4  and 5 if you like!!)

Lol.. there have been days when my personal time was spend hanging out in the closet eating M&M’s.. (yeah.. I think we have all had days kind of like that). But in all seriousness, we need to take care of ourselves, and taking personal time is NOT a luxury. It is necessary so you can stay mentally healthy for yourself and your family.

“She never quite leaves her children at home, even when she doesn’t take them along.” -Margaret Culkin Banning

We all know this, but I think sometimes we forget and get wrapped up with the day to day activity.. but you can’t just go, go, go! Just by taking a little break each day you can recharge and make yourself that much more efficient.

Hear are a few ideas for taking time for yourself (leave your ideas in the comments):

  • Sit down and eat your lunch and don’t do anything else. Eat mindfully and enjoy your food and quiet time. Enough of this eating over the sink ;)
  • Go for a walk. It can clear your mind and energize the body (it’s OK to take the dog, but not the kids)
  • Sit down and relax (what?? what is this word, relax??). Read a few articles in a magazine or do a few yoga stretches.
  • Take a bubble bath,do your nails, give yourself a facial.
  • Pick up some relaxing music and pair with any of the above!

relaxing music

These things just take a few minutes.  After you perfect these, move onto bigger things.  You might want to take a painting or exercise class, hang out with a girlfriend, go see a show with your mom. Find things that are just for you, that YOU love and want to do.. pamper yourself just a little.

Find a way.. even if it ends up only being 5 minutes.. it’s a good start.

Stress Management Techniques for Moms#5: Give kids a LITTLE push out of the nest

“The child becomes a person through work.” Maria Montessori

Often mom’s will do EVERYTHING.. this includes working outside the home as well as feeling the weight for the housework, too. But this is unnecessary and doing EVERYTHING doesn’t make you a better mom, just a stressed mom.  It’s OK, even healthy, for our kids to get some independence and responsibility.

What responsibilities your kids can take on will depend on their ages and maturity levels. But most kids can do a lot more that we are having them do now!. Start out giving them a few need responsibilities and see what happens.. then you can add a few more if they are ready. Kids can be given daily chores and as they get older these can be increased.  Some of these might be optional for them, if they want to earn money and some such be required, with not compensation, just because everyone in the house is a “team” and works together to keep the household going.

Kids can easily do tasks like:

  • Make their school lunch daily
  • Help with dinner or even make a weekly meal if they are old enough
  • Do the dishes or at least put away their own dishes
  • Fold laundry
  • Take out the trash
  • Organize the recycling (maybe they can take it in and get the money for it if they do this)
  • Feed and care for your animals
  • Clean their rooms and make beds
  • Clean their bathrooms with non-toxic cleaners.

Head over to Amazon and grab some fun tools like Chore Apps, books and charts that might help encourage your kids with the chores.

kids and chores

Do this not only takes the load off of you as a mom, it also teaches your kids responsibly and lessens feelings of entitlement.  It’s important for their futures!!

How to Save Money on Food, 6 Tips (part 2 of 2)

This Post May Contain Affiliate Links : Disclosure Policy

How to Save Money on FoodYesterday we told you about 3 ways on How to Save Money on Food.  Today we have the final 3.  Now of course there are many, many more tricks and tips to save money on your grocery bill and we would LOVE to hear your best in the comments!

Please share with us :)

4. Don’t grocery shop when you are hungry. We ALL know what happens when we shop hungry, EVERYTHING ends up in the cart. (Funny side note.. occasionally I shop hungry on purpose, when I am out of food in the house and know it’s the only way that fridge is going to get filled up again ).  But in general, food shopping on an empty stomach means that you will pick up more things than you really need, and probably more junk food.

5. Make a List. I think making a list is especially important if you don’t shop hungry! When you are not hungry it is sometimes TOO easy to pass things up, no matter the price. Check through your pantry, freezer and the refrigerator before you leave home to find what you need, then write them down. Then you need to actually stick to the list.  Here are some grocery list apps you can download and try.

6. Shop at the same stores. This doesn’t mean you have to shop at only 1 store, just that you pick and choose and get to know them. When you are unfamiliar with a store you don’t know where anything is, and this can lead to forgetting items or just not finding them. When you go to the same store or stores each time you are more familiar with the prices there and you can estimate your bills total as you write your grocery list. Again, it’s OK to shop at more than one, but take the time to get to know the store, where the clearance items are and the aisles you want to shop in and the ones to avoid.  You may even have one or two stores on your rounds that you do your primary shopping and a couple to visit occasionally if you know of a good sale or certain days they do markdowns.  But you would only go to those for the deals, not your whole list.

So, just by making a few simple changes to your routine you can keep your grocery budget in check fairly easily.  Have you already been doing any of them?  Do you feel any affect your bottle line for the better?
