It’s sad when I have to explain coupons to a Manager

I think it is bad for any store when I have to explain how their coupon system works to the manager, really, it’s bad.

I went to a store yesterday for their Dr. Scholls Register Reward deal and had an issue, of course. I tried to use my coupon plus the store coupon and was supposed to get $5RR back. I did two transactions with no problem at all. I went to purchase a different style that was clearly listed in the print on the store coupon and it would not ring up. I politely asked for a manager, thinking they would actually know what to do. He did not.

The manager came and took the item, went back to look at the display (not sure why, the display was not the issue). Came back and told me the sale price was after the $5 coupon, I politely explained it to him that no the coupon was in fact a coupon and should work off the sale price, the item was listed in the fine print, it should work.

He stumbled over himself for a minute trying to figure it out and then proceeded to tell me that was not right because after the coupon and RR I would only be paying $1 something. I said right… that’s the point. He didn’t like that at all and gave me the feeling I was trying to scam their store with their own coupons (how is that possible?). I tried to explain it to him again and again I got the same response that I was basiacly wrong.

He then proceeded to tell me he would adjust the price but there would be no RR, I said no the whole point was to get my RR back. He said he could not do that. I, in fact, have worked for this store before and know managers of these stores, he can do it he just didn’t want to. I let it go and told him I would go to another store who understood the coupon system.

But before I left I asked him (I already know the answer) if there was a corporate coupon policy, he looked at me weird and proceeded to point out their sales paper and monthly coupon book (what the.. ??) I said no.. a  c.o.u.p.o.n  p.o.l.i.c.y.  He looked at me like I was crazy and said No. Great, the manager is also slow apparently.

I was frustrated with the fact that I had to just explain a company’s system to one of their own managers. This should not happen but sadly it does. I came home and sent the company a nice email just asking if they would please explain their policies and system to their managers because it looks bad for a customer to have to explain it to them.

I got a nice phone call today from the store manager getting the full story and said she would explain the system to the managers to make sure they know how it works. She was very pleasant and I will go back there… I just now know not to go there with “difficult” transactions, only give that guy the easy ones a kindergartner could understand.

I love this post, I have felt the same way at certain stores and it is sooo frustrating.

I refuse to go to the store you are talking about any more. I have had similar problems with my transactions at a number of their stores in my town. I have had managers give me the same kind of trouble. I go to competitors stores and they are happy to help me and even excited to see me getting great deals. I don't feel like I should continue to give my business to a store that is going to give me so much trouble to do so. I'm glad to know that I am not the only one having these problems.

He probably gave you a hard time because the coupons in the Walgreen's booklet ARE manufacturers coupons, read them,it says it right on them. And they won't allow you to use two manufacturers at on one item, that's IF they catch that fact. My local Walgreens finally caught on,and won't accept the booklet coupons in combo with other manufacturers coupons anymore, but they will let you combine the circular Wags coupons with the booklet or other manufacturers coupons. It depends on the Walgreen's ,and if they are paying attention and reading the booklet coupons.Hope that helps.
